Si Fest #21 - Learning from Photography

SI Fest will have its 21st edition on September 14-16, with many excellent exhibitions, workshops, lectures and portfolio reviews. Like last year, the reviews will be for both portfolios and book dummies. I will be among the reviewers in both sessions, so please come and say hi if you're around.

Among the many interesting artists on show this year, just to mention a few:

- Mark Steinmetz, Raymond Wouda and Guido Guidi will present their new work for the festival's Sin_Tesis project in a group show which will present the whole series of the commissioned projects from these past four years, featuring also Marco Zanta, Andrew Phelps, Simon Roberts and Martin Parr;

- Mark Power's The Sound of Two Songs, a five-year work about contemporary Poland;

- Alessandro Imbriaco will present Angela's Garden, winner of the 2012 European Publishers of the Year Award;

- Life after Zero Hour, a collaboration between Massimo Mastrorillo and Donald Weber, a personal investigation about Japan after the 2011 tsunami.

- Hans Christian Schink's 1h, with his series of solarized sun paths across the world.

And that was just a starter, come to Savignano and see the rest for yourself!

Back after a long absence, I thought the best way to resuscitate this blog was to share some news and informations about photography-related activities I have been involved in over the last months:

One year ago, Tommaso Bonaventura and Alessandro Imbriaco proposed me to curate a new photographic project they were planning to shoot together. The result has been an intense year-long work which led to Corpi di Reato (Bodies of Evidence), a journey through the Italian landscape in search of signs of the presence of the mafia across the country, from north to south.

From the text introducing the work:

"For a long time the mafia has been perceived as a scattered, multiform, almost invisible entity. After the 1990s and the height of a sweep of bloodshed, organized crime in Italy slowly changed its appearance and began to blend in with the political and economic fabric of the country.

Corpi di reato proposes to contrast this dispersion and restore a tangible sightline of the mafia by retracing the marks it left around the country. It also wants to show the void, the emptiness, that these criminal acts provoked.

[...]

As far back as ten years ago, it was said that the mafia was becoming invisible, concealed behind a mask of normality. Corpi di reato attempts to reproduce the mafia through images that create a visual thread joining the slew of massacres that occurred twenty years ago to the grey area where it thrives today".

The gallery presented online is just a short selection of images from the project (which is still in progress), where you can have an idea also of the interaction we are experimenting between photographs, video and archive stills and footage.

Corpi di Reato will be part of the Fotografia Rome's International Festival, with a show at the Central Institute for Cataloguing and Documentation (ICCD) from October 18 to November 23.

Corpi di Reato is a project by ZONA, a new association that promotes, develops, and fosters projects that chronicle the present-day through images.
